We will be discussing how to protect your citrus trees from citrus aphids’ insect attacks. Aphids are sap-sucking insects that feed on new and young plant leaves and stems. They produce a sticky substance (honeydew) as they feed on the plant. This sticky substance makes a black fungus grow on it, coating leaves, branches, and fruit with a black powder.
The black/brown citrus aphid (Toxoptera citricidus) is the most common in Nigeria and other tropical parts of the world. Aphids are mostly found in citrus trees from early April to September during the rainy season. When the tree will have a new stem and leaf growths.
Dangers Of Aphids On Citrus Trees
Aphids all have a piercing-sucking mouthpart called stylet that they insert into the plant tissue to feed on leaves, green shoots, and flowers. They attack young citrus plants and the soft newly growing leaves stem of the citrus tree.
The large quantities of honeydew produced as the aphid feeds turn black with the growth of sooty mould fungus. These black moulds cover the surface of the leaves and prevent sunlight from getting to the leaves which reduces photosynthesis.
In the case of Severe aphid infestation on the citrus tree, the spread of Citrus tristeza virus might occur. This virus if not properly managed can cause dieback or might kill the citrus tree.
Management Methods Of Controlling Citrus Aphids
Chemical control
This is the most effective way of controlling the citrus aphid insect infestation. Mix insecticides like G-force, sniper, or any good insecticides inside a stray can add a good quantity of water, and mix it very well. After mixing spray it all over the citrus tree, spray on the leaves, and also directly on the aphids on the citrus tree.
This method is very effective in controlling and killing aphids. Check the tree on a monthly basis to see if the aphids are still on the citrus and apply the insecticides again on the tree.
Biological control
This technique can be used also to control the citrus aphid infestation and is also an effective alternative method.
Spray the citrus tree with neem oil to control the spread of the insects. Also, get neem leaves from a neem tree and soak them in water for 2 days, extract the water after soaking. Extracted neem leaf water is a natural insecticide to control and eliminate aphids on trees.
